Multiplayer survival horror game Left 4 Dead 2 sees a group of survivors take on hordes of zombies. Released in 2009, it's one of Valve's best-known games and even received a community built update just this year.Left 4 Dead 2 seems like it would be a standard zombie fighting experience. When you include mods, however, it becomes anything but that. Situations can become even scarier or maybe comical.

These mods all change the game in various ways, and all do so fantastically, thanks to fans who have put a lot of work into them. Players looking to experience a whole new take onLeft 4 Dead 2 should give these mods a shot.

Palpatine as a Hunter

Left-4-Dead-2-Hunter

Not every mod is inherently complicated; some just change the zombie sound effects. This one does exactly what the title says and makes the Hunter speak lines from Emperor Palpatine when nearby or encountered. Instead of hisses or guttural sounds, players can turn a dark corner and hear, "Are you threatening me, Master Jedi," instead.

This spices gameplay up by keeping players even more on their toes for when a zombie might be near, which only enhances the experience. The comedic value of it cannot be left out either. It breathes new life into an experience that players may have had several times.

Hotel Mario Concert

This one is an audio mod that changes a specific part of the game. In the campaign "Dark Carnival," players will repeatedly find posters advertising a band called Midnight Riders. At the end of the campaign, starting the abandoned concert up is how players escape, and that's where this mod comes in. It changes both of those.

The Hotel Mario Concert Mod changes the in-game Midnight Riders posters to advertise a Hotel Mario performance. The posters showing the band members now portray that game's versions of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser. Additionally, the rock concert to alert a nearby helicopter is changed so that music from the infamous CD-I game now plays instead of the performance usually there. If players want to spice up the game with something very unexpected and out of place, this is a fantastic mod to consider.

There are just as many menu changing mods as there are survivor skins, and they range from strangely fitting to so out of place it's sure to draw a laugh. This mod absolutely falls in the second category, though it somehow still manages to work. The modder, Catra, really did some work with this one.

When activated, the mod makes the title displayed on the menu read "Left 4 Ponies 2," and the menu icons for things like campaign or versus have changed to include the show's main characters. This is purely a cosmetic change, but this worth it for the hilarious disconnect of the two properties alone. Some mods are purely made for the sheer ridiculousness of what they are, which certainly qualifies. Players should look for this one and pair it with some dark menu music for even better results.

Mileena (Flesh Pits) for Rochelle

One of the more abundant types of mods for this game are survivor mods. These replace the standard survivors in-game with a different character. The voice won't change at all, but that makes for a more comical experience for those inclined. These types of mods work well to give old situations a bit of a jolt.

This mod replaces the model for Rochelle with the Flesh Pits variant of Mileena from the 2011 Mortal Kombat. All the animations are coded, so healing, grabbing weapons, and fighting all work well. Mods like this one can make a fun time better when players mix and match a bunch together. This can lead to hilarious setups, such as Mileena, The Postal Dude, Skarlet and Leatherface blasting through hordes.

Rocket Jump Waltz Credits

The last mod on the list is a credits mod. When players finish a campaign, the credits roll to the song "The Monsters Within," and players return to the menu. There is again an abundance of these mods for almost any game or show you can think of. This one stands out for a reason, though.

When used, the normal theme is replaced withTeam Fortress 2's "Rocket Jump Waltz." It seems like it shouldn't fit, but oddly, it almost does. When you consider that Valve made both games, it makes it a bit less silly than the other mods, but can still get a laugh. This is definitely a mod for theTF2 fan who is looking to shake up their zombie hunting experience.
